Road Safety Week 2

9th Jun 2020

Road Safety Education - Week 2 Task (Pedestrian Safety)

Dear Principal,

As per last week, during the month of June it is my aim to issue a weekly email for you to send on to your teachers for onward issue to their respective classes in relation to road safety education.  The email will set a task for the parent to work alongside their child/children and focus on a road safety theme with the aim that both will learn and put into practice.

As I stressed last week, whilst there have been less traffic on our roads (especially early on in the lockdown), many more people have been out walking, running and cycling.  Sadly, during this time, collisions on our roads have still been occurring with some resulting in serious injuries and fatalities.  This is likely to continue as lockdown further relaxes and we enter the summer months when children and young people have more time to be out and about.

This week, the theme is pedestrian safety and the aim is that parents will use the opportunity, whilst out on their daily exercise or visit to the shops, to talk to their children about and practise safe pedestrian habits.  Please cut and paste the information below (depending on the age of pupils in each particular class) into whatever form your communication with parents is taking at present (Seesaw, Classroom, Class Dojo, etc.) and add the appropriate attachment (again depending on the age of pupils in each particular class).  There is one task applicable for 4-7 year olds and one for 8-11 year olds due to the age at which children are generally considered to be ready to judge speed and distance of vehicles i.e. eight years.  Each age range has two associated worksheets which can be used to reinforce the learning but are not intended to be used in isolation.

Thank you for your ongoing commitment to the promotion of road safety and sustainable travel.
